Review on Bar Restaurante Rojas Clemente - lovely food outside a local food market!

Café in Spain is not just a place where you have a coffee in most cases (unless you found yourself in Starbucks). Basically a cafeteria is a bistro or a bar where they do all day dining. Some would just stop for a coffee, some may order a few tapas and a wine, while order a 50cm long sandwich for almuerzo (brunch) or sit down for a menu del día (menu of the day).

Bar Restaurante Rojas Clemente is one of my favourite cafetería / bar that is really close to the Spanish academy I went to. While it is outside of a market like a "Dai Pan Dong 大排檔" in HK, they have one of the best food in town served at really good value too.

The other day my friend Jon and I came here for menu del día (lunch menu). For 12 euros, we got a starter, a main, a dessert and a coffee.

We both got the Pastel del Día (Tart of the day) for the starter. This is absolutely a must-order and we get it every time when we come for almuerzo (like breakfast / brunch). The tart is different everyday but it is usually a homemade thin, flaky pastry filled with vegetables and goat cheese. This one is made with stewed tomato and aubergines which is our favourite It never fails to impress!

For main, Jon got the seared Salmon and I ordered this octopus stew served with crispy potato and grilled red pepper and some paprika. To be honest I usually prefer having octopus grill but this dish was pretty good too. It was flavourful yet the octopus was cooked just right.

For dessert there are so many choices. I love their cakes because they are so homey and they are brilliantly delicious! Jon loves their chocolate cake which is rich and with bits of nuts inside. Meanwhile I love this almond cake served with the classic leche merengada, a a frozen smoothie of milk, egg white, cinnamon, sugar and lemon, and top with more cinnamon. The cake was so spongy with a lovely scent of almond. Don't miss it if you have a sweet tooth!

We finish the meal with a nice cup of coffee.

In case you wonder, you can also order all the above dishes separately and dishes are available while stock lasts 😆 For instance, you can also order the tart of the day for Almuerzo:

This is the goat cheese, spinach and tomato tart which is also super good! In the background there is Adri with this huge sandwich and coke for almuerzo (brunch) XD

If you order the tart and a drink, it will cost you around 6 euros. Meanwhile, this whole menu with drink and coffee is only 12 euros which is such a good deal!

Having a drink or a meal on the terrace is huge thing in Spain and I love this culture because you can enjoy the sun and the fresh air while not having to be cramped inside the restaurant. One thing to keep in mind when dining in Spain is never judge a place by its look. This place is a local bar that probably not offer the most fancy experience, but they are definitely one of the bar in town offering a really good value. And don't worry if you don't under the menu because the staff is really nice there and they would explain it to you in fluent English!

Check out for more menu del día  or almuerzo reviews.

I hope you enjoy my sharing. See you next time!

Lots of love,
Cherrie
